What this alteration involves

These adjustments change the fit through the waist, seat, hips or sides. Dress trousers are often built for this: many have a center back seam with extra fabric so the waist and seat can be taken in or let out. Skirts and dresses are usually adjusted at the side seams or darts. Taking in is generally easier, because it only removes room. Letting out needs fabric that is already there, folded inside the seam. Jeans and most casual pants have narrow, finished seams with little to spare. Belt loops, pockets, zippers and waistbands all sit across these seams, and they affect how much can change and how clean the result looks. Changing the waist a lot without changing the seat or hips can throw off how the whole garment hangs.

How to get the best fit

  • Wear the garment to the fitting so the change can be pinned on you, not guessed from a measurement.
  • Wear the shoes and undergarments you normally wear with it.
  • Say how you like it to fit: close, relaxed, or with room to sit comfortably.
  • If your weight is still changing, mention it. A small change now may be better than a big one you later need to undo.

What can and cannot be done

Letting out is limited by the seam allowance, which is often narrow and sometimes almost nothing. The old stitch line, and a faded or shiny line where the fold sat, can show after letting out, especially on dark wool, denim and fabrics with a sheen. Taking in a lot can distort pockets and the shape of the seat. At the counter we can check the seams on your garment and say what it allows.

Common problems

  • Fitness or weight changes

If you have lost or gained weight, it is tempting to alter everything at once. Clothes taken in a lot can be hard to let back out, because the extra fabric may have been trimmed away. If your weight is still changing, start with the pieces you wear most and leave the rest until things settle.

  • Visible lines after letting out

When a seam is let out, fabric that was folded inside comes to the outside. It may carry needle holes, a crease, or a color difference if the outside has faded from sun or washing. Pressing helps with creases, but needle holes and fading usually stay to some degree.

I’m convinced these guys are the only cleaners left that can actually heavy starch a pair of jeans. Their heavy option is HEAVY, we don’t even bother trying the extra heavy, I don’t think we’d be able to get his jeans apart lol

Questions about taking in and letting out

How much can pants be let out?

It depends on the seam allowance. Dress trousers with a center back seam often have some room at the waist and seat. Jeans and casual pants usually have very little. Bring them in to have the seams checked.

Can pants be taken in at the waist only?

Often, yes, through the center back seam. If the waist comes in a lot but the seat stays the same, the back can look baggy, so a larger change may need the seat adjusted too.

Is it worth altering clothes after losing weight?

For pieces you like and wear often, usually yes. Large reductions can change pockets and proportions, so ask at the counter what your specific garment allows before you decide.
