Wool coat cleaning in Tomball, TX
Why wool coats need careful cleaning
A wool coat is thick and heavy, and it is built to hold its shape. Most have a full lining and chest interfacing, and some add padding or an interlining for warmth. Wet wool weighs far more than dry wool, so a washer can stretch the seams and the coat may dry out of shape. Agitation and heat felt the fibers, which shrinks the coat and leaves the surface stiff and matted. Many coats are wool and cashmere blends that pill wherever a bag strap or seatbelt rubs. Large buttons, toggles, belts and detachable hoods add pieces that need attention, and the hem of a long coat picks up mud and rain spots.
Reading the care label
Wool coats nearly always say Dry clean, and many say Dry clean only. Take Dry clean only seriously on a coat, because the thick wool and layered structure are the reason it is there. If the label lists a blend, such as wool with cashmere or nylon, the care is usually still dry cleaning. A detachable lining or hood may carry its own label with different instructions.
Before you bring them in
- Empty all pockets. Coats collect gloves, tissues, pens and lip balm, and a melted lip balm can stain the lining.
- Bring the belt, detachable hood or zip out lining along with the coat.
- Point out mud or water spots along the hem.
- Check large buttons and toggles. Heavy buttons work loose with use and can be secured or replaced.
- Show any split seam in the lining, which often happens at the underarm or the back vent.
Care between cleanings
- Brush the coat downward after wearing to lift dust and lint from the surface.
- Let a damp coat dry at room temperature on a wide hanger, away from a heater or vent.
- Store it clean in a breathable cotton garment bag, not the thin plastic cover it came home in.
- Plan on one cleaning at the end of the cold season, or sooner if it gets a stain.
Common problems
Pilling
Pills are small balls of fiber that form where the coat rubs, such as under the arms, at the cuffs and where a bag strap sits. Softer wool and cashmere blends pill more than dense melton wool. Remove them gently with a sweater comb or fabric shaver. Pilling is wear, not dirt, so cleaning will not remove it.
Moths during storage
Moth larvae feed on wool and are drawn to food and sweat residue. Around Tomball, a winter coat may hang unworn for most of the year, which gives them plenty of time. Clean the coat before storage, use cedar as a light deterrent, and check it a few times over the summer.
Musty smell or mildew
Humid air and a closed closet can leave a stored coat smelling stale, and mildew spots sometimes appear on the lining. Let the closet breathe, avoid plastic covers, and use a moisture absorber if the space stays damp. A coat that smells musty should be cleaned before you wear it again.

I’m convinced these guys are the only cleaners left that can actually heavy starch a pair of jeans. Their heavy option is HEAVY, we don’t even bother trying the extra heavy, I don’t think we’d be able to get his jeans apart lol

Questions about wool coats
How often should a wool coat be dry cleaned?
Usually once a season, before it goes into storage, plus any time it gets a stain. Brushing and airing in between keep it fresh without putting extra wear on the wool.
Can I wash a wool coat in the washing machine?
Not unless the label specifically allows it. Most wool coats will shrink, felt or lose their shape in a washer and dryer, and the lining can pull. Follow a dry clean label.
Can a torn coat lining be fixed?
Yes. Repairs such as split linings and loose seams are part of the alterations Tomball Cleaners does. Bring the coat in and the counter can tell you what can be done for that coat.
