Why sweaters and cashmere need careful cleaning

A knit is made of interlocking loops, not woven threads, so it stretches when wet and heavy and can dry longer or wider than before. Cashmere and merino have fine, scaly fibers that lock together under heat and rubbing. That is felting, and it cannot be undone. A sweater that goes through a warm wash and a dryer can come out a size or two smaller and stiff to the touch. Ribbed cuffs and hems lose their spring when stretched on a hanger. Cable knits and chunky knits hold a lot of water and dry slowly. Sweaters with beads, sequins, leather trim or mixed yarns can bleed color or snag.

Reading the care label

Cashmere labels often say Hand wash cold, Dry clean, or both. Dry clean on a knit usually means it is the recommended method, not the only one. Dry clean only, often seen on blends and embellished sweaters, means washing was not tested and the maker expects trouble. The drying symbol of a square with a horizontal line across the middle means lay it flat to dry.

Before you bring them in

  • Point out any small holes now, since a hole in a knit can run if it is snagged.
  • Remove brooches and pins, which leave holes in fine knits.
  • Mention deodorant marks or yellowing at the underarms.
  • Bring matching pieces together, like a twin set, so they are cleaned the same way and stay alike.

Care between cleanings

  • Fold sweaters on a shelf or in a drawer. Hangers stretch the shoulders and leave pointed bumps.
  • Air a sweater out overnight after wearing before you fold it away.
  • Wear a thin layer underneath fine knits so less body oil reaches the sweater.
  • Store clean sweaters in breathable bags with cedar, since moths go for soiled wool first.
  • Use a cashmere comb lightly on pills instead of pulling them off with your fingers.

Common problems

  • Shrinking and felting

Felting happens when wool or cashmere fibers lock together from heat, water and rubbing, and the knit tightens and thickens. One warm wash or a short dryer cycle is enough to do it. Felted knits cannot be returned to their original size. Wash cold by hand only if the label allows, and never tumble dry.

  • Stretched shoulders and hems

Hanging a heavy knit pulls it downward and leaves bumps at the shoulders. Wringing a wet sweater stretches it too. Fold knits for storage. After hand washing, roll the sweater in a towel to press the water out, then lay it flat and ease it back into shape while it dries.

  • Pills under the arms

Pills form where fibers rub, mostly under the arms, along the sides and on the cuffs. Cashmere made from shorter fibers pills more than cashmere made from long ones, and the first several wears produce the most. Gentle combing removes them. Pilling is a normal sign of wear and does not wash or clean away.

I’m convinced these guys are the only cleaners left that can actually heavy starch a pair of jeans. Their heavy option is HEAVY, we don’t even bother trying the extra heavy, I don’t think we’d be able to get his jeans apart lol

Questions about sweaters and cashmere

Is it better to dry clean or hand wash cashmere?

Both can work for plain cashmere if the label lists them. Dry cleaning is the safer option for dry clean only labels, blends, dark colors that might bleed, and sweaters with trim or beading.

How often should I clean a cashmere sweater?

Usually after several wears, unless it is stained or smells. Wool and cashmere resist odor naturally, and airing between wears helps. Cleaning too often wears out the fibers faster.

Can a shrunken sweater be fixed?

Usually not. Once wool or cashmere has felted, the fibers are locked together. Mild shrinkage sometimes relaxes a little with gentle reshaping, but a sweater that felted in the dryer rarely returns to its old size.
