Can you dry clean cashmere? What to know before you do

By the Tomball Cleaners Team, Tomball, TX. Published . 5 minute read.

Yes, you can dry clean cashmere. For most cashmere sweaters it is a safe, gentle option, and for anything labeled dry clean only it is the right one. You just don’t need to do it very often.

Can you dry clean cashmere sweaters?

In most cases, yes. Cashmere is a fine, soft animal fiber, and it does not take well to heat, agitation, or harsh detergent. Those are the things that cause shrinking, felting, and a matted, stiff feel. Professional dry cleaning avoids the soaking and tumbling that cause most home washing accidents.

That said, the label on your sweater is the final word. A care tag will tell you whether the maker expects professional cleaning, hand washing, or either one. If you need help decoding it, our guide to reading the care symbols on your clothing labels covers each symbol.

The same applies to jumpers. “Jumper” is just another word for sweater, and a cashmere jumper is cared for the same way as a cashmere sweater.

Do you have to dry clean cashmere sweaters?

No. Plenty of cashmere sweaters can be washed by hand at home if you are careful. Dry cleaning is not a rule for the fiber itself. It is a recommendation from the maker, and it depends on the garment.

Some things point toward dry cleaning:

  • The label says dry clean only.
  • The sweater is a blend with silk, wool, or another fiber that reacts differently to water.
  • The color is dark, deep, or bright and could bleed.
  • The piece has structure, such as a lined cardigan, a collar, or trim.
  • It has a stain you can’t identify.

If you have a sweater from an online brand such as Quince, read the tag on that particular piece. Brands differ, and the label on your garment is what matters, not what the brand does with other styles. If the tag is missing or unreadable, treat it as the more delicate case and ask us at the counter.

How often should you dry clean cashmere sweaters?

Less often than you might think. Cashmere does not hold odor the way cotton does, and over cleaning wears down the fibers over time.

A reasonable pattern for most people:

  • Wear it a few times, then air it out for a day before putting it back.
  • Clean it once a season, or after about five or six wears.
  • Clean it sooner if it has a stain, a smell, or has been worn in heat and sweat.
  • Clean it before you store it for the season, every time.

That last point matters more than most people expect. Body oils and small food spills that you can’t see are what attract moths and turn into yellow marks over months in a closet. If you live in this area, humidity makes storage harder still, so see how to store seasonal clothes in hot and humid weather.

What does “cashmere sweater dry clean only” actually mean?

It means the manufacturer tested the garment for professional cleaning and does not recommend water washing. The reason is often the dye, the knit construction, or the other fibers in the blend, not just the cashmere itself.

You can ignore a dry clean only label and sometimes get away with it, but you take on the risk. If the sweater shrinks or bleeds, there is usually no fix. Our article on dry clean versus dry clean only explains how those two labels differ and why makers choose one over the other.

If the label says hand wash, the maker is telling you water is fine. A circle with an X through it is the one to watch for, since it means no professional dry cleaning. Check for it before you bring anything in.

How do you wash cashmere at home if the label allows it?

Only do this if the tag says hand wash or machine wash on a delicate setting is not forbidden. When in doubt, skip it.

  1. Fill a clean basin with cool or lukewarm water. Avoid hot water.
  2. Add a small amount of mild detergent made for delicates or wool. Skip bleach and fabric softener.
  3. Turn the sweater inside out and press it under the water. Let it soak for about 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Swish gently. Do not scrub, twist, or wring.
  5. Drain the basin and rinse in cool water until the suds are gone.
  6. Press the water out against the side of the basin, then roll the sweater in a clean towel to take out more.
  7. Reshape it and lay it flat on a dry towel, away from sun and heat.

Never hang a wet cashmere sweater. The weight of the water stretches it, especially at the shoulders. Never put it in a dryer. For more on shaping and drying knits, see how to care for sweaters and knits so they keep their shape.

How do you care for cashmere between cleanings?

Small habits do most of the work.

Rest it between wears

Give a sweater a day or two to recover and let moisture leave the fibers. Fold it rather than hanging it, since hangers pull knits out of shape.

Deal with pilling gently

Pilling is normal with cashmere, because the fibers are short and soft. Remove pills with a fabric shaver or a fine sweater comb, working lightly. Pulling them off by hand can damage the knit.

Spot treat small spills fast

Blot, don’t rub. Dab with a little cool water and a clean white cloth. Anything greasy or unknown is better left for a professional, since the wrong product can leave a ring or fade the color.

Store it clean and folded

Keep sweaters in a breathable cotton bag or a drawer, with cedar if you like. Avoid plastic, which traps moisture.

When should you bring cashmere to a professional?

Bring it in when the label says dry clean only, when it has a stain you are not sure how to treat, when it is a blend or a deep color you are worried about, or when it is a sweater you can’t afford to ruin. Cashmere is expensive to replace, and a shrunken or felted sweater can’t be reversed.

Common questions

Do you have to dry clean cashmere sweaters?

No, not always. Many cashmere sweaters can be hand washed in cool water, but the care label decides. If it says dry clean only, or you are unsure about the fabric blend or dye, dry cleaning is the safer choice.

How often should you dry clean cashmere sweaters?

Most cashmere only needs cleaning once a season or after five to six wears, sooner if it has a stain or odor. Airing it between wears and storing it clean means you can clean it less often.

Can you dry clean cashmere jumpers?

Yes. A jumper is just the British word for a sweater, and cashmere jumpers are handled the same way. Check the label, and if it permits professional cleaning, dry cleaning is a gentle option for them.

Can you dry clean a Quince cashmere sweater?

It depends on the label on your specific sweater. Brands differ, and some cashmere is made to be washed by hand. Read the tag. If it allows professional cleaning or you are unsure, bring it in and ask.

Is it better to wash or dry clean a cashmere sweater?

Either can work. Hand washing in cool water with mild soap is fine for many sweaters if you dry them flat. Dry cleaning suits tailored pieces, dark or deep dyes, blends, and anything labeled dry clean only.
