Why uniforms and workwear need careful cleaning

Workwear takes a beating and gets cleaned often, so small mistakes add up fast. Polyester blends hold onto body oils and odor, and heat from a dryer can set those smells and wrinkles in. Chef coats collect grease that does not come out in a cool wash and can show as dark spots later. Scrubs fade when washed with bleach or very hot water, and colors can bleed onto lighter pieces. Embroidered logos and heat applied patches can pucker or peel if they are ironed directly or tumbled hot. Dress uniforms and work blazers often have interfacing and padded shoulders that are not meant for a washer at all.

Reading the care label

Uniform labels usually say machine wash warm, tumble dry low, and many polyester blends add do not use bleach. A triangle crossed out means no bleach of any kind. Dots inside the dryer or iron symbol show the heat limit, and one dot is low. Work blazers and dress uniforms often say dry clean, which matters because water can bubble the interfacing inside the front panels.

Before you bring them in

  • Empty every pocket, including pens, badges, lighters and earplugs.
  • Point out grease, food or ink stains and say what they are if you know.
  • Mention any patch, logo or name tape that is starting to peel.
  • Separate pieces that are dry clean only, like a work blazer, from the washable shirts.
  • Tell the counter if you want creases or starch on shirts and pants.

Care between cleanings

  • Hang uniforms up right after a shift so sweat can dry before odor sets in.
  • Rotate at least two or three sets so each one gets a rest between wears.
  • Blot fresh grease or food spills with a paper towel instead of rubbing them in.
  • Keep scrubs away from bleach and hot dryer cycles to hold their color longer.
  • Wash or clean after every shift for scrubs and chef coats, and every few wears for office uniforms.

Common problems

  • Odor that comes back

Polyester blends can trap body oils deep in the fibers, so a uniform smells fine after washing and then smells again as soon as you warm up. Hot dryer heat makes it harder to clear. Avoid fabric softener on these pieces and mention the odor at the counter.

  • Grease spots on chef coats

Cooking oil soaks into cotton and polyester and can turn into dark or yellow spots, sometimes only after the coat dries. A cool home wash often leaves it behind. Point out the grease areas when you drop the coat off, and do not dry a coat that still shows spots.

  • Faded or blotchy scrubs

Bleach, hot water and splashes of hand sanitizer or cleaning chemicals can strip the dye from colored scrubs in patches. Once color is gone, it cannot be put back. Wash colored scrubs separately, avoid bleach, and rinse chemical splashes with water as soon as you can.

I’m convinced these guys are the only cleaners left that can actually heavy starch a pair of jeans. Their heavy option is HEAVY, we don’t even bother trying the extra heavy, I don’t think we’d be able to get his jeans apart lol

Questions about uniforms and workwear

Do you clean work uniforms?

Yes, uniforms are accepted at the counter. Each piece is cleaned according to its care label, so washable shirts are laundered and dry clean only blazers are dry cleaned.

Can scrubs be pressed?

Most cotton and polyester scrubs can be pressed at low to medium heat. Stretchy scrubs with spandex need lower heat, so check the label and ask at the counter.

How do I get the grease smell out of a chef coat?

Treat it soon, before it is dried hot. Blot fresh grease, keep the coat out of the dryer, and point out the greasy areas when you bring it in.
