Why comforters and duvets need careful cleaning

The biggest issue is size. A queen or king comforter can be too bulky for a home washer, so detergent does not rinse out and the fill stays soaked in the middle. Down holds a lot of water and dries slowly. If it is put away even a little damp, it can clump, smell musty or grow mildew. Synthetic fill, usually polyester, is easier to wash but can mat and go flat with high dryer heat. Stitched baffles keep the fill in place, and weak seams can split under the weight of a wet comforter in a small drum. Satin or silk shells add their own care limits.

Reading the care label

Comforter labels often say machine wash in a large capacity washer, tumble dry low, or dry clean. Large capacity is the key phrase. If your washer cannot hold the comforter with room to move, you are better off bringing it in. Some down comforters and those with silk or satin shells say dry clean only. If the label is long gone, tell the counter what the fill is.

Before you bring them in

  • Take off the duvet cover and bring it separately if it needs cleaning too.
  • Check the corners and seams for small holes where feathers or fill are escaping.
  • Point out pet stains, spills or spots from a sick day.
  • Tell us if the fill is down, feather or polyester if the label is missing.
  • Carry it in a large bag or pillowcase to keep it clean on the way in.

Care between cleanings

  • Use a duvet cover and wash the cover often so the comforter stays cleaner longer.
  • Shake and fluff down comforters every few days to keep the fill spread out.
  • Air the comforter outside or near an open window on a dry day a few times a year.
  • Store it in a breathable cotton bag, not sealed plastic, in a dry closet.
  • Have the comforter itself cleaned once or twice a year if it is used under a cover.

Common problems

  • Clumped fill

When down or fiberfill is washed and not dried all the way, the fill bunches into lumps and leaves thin empty spots. Shaking helps a little, but damp clumps can also start to smell. If your comforter is already lumpy, mention it at the counter when you bring it in.

  • Musty or mildew smell

A comforter stored damp or in humid air can develop a sour, musty smell, and down is especially prone to it. Do not just spray it with freshener. Let it dry out, then bring it in for cleaning, and store it somewhere with air flow afterward.

I’m convinced these guys are the only cleaners left that can actually heavy starch a pair of jeans. Their heavy option is HEAVY, we don’t even bother trying the extra heavy, I don’t think we’d be able to get his jeans apart lol

Questions about comforters and duvets

Can you dry clean a down comforter?

Many down comforters can be dry cleaned, and some labels call for it. Others are made to be washed in a large machine. Bring it in with the label and ask at the counter.

Why not wash my comforter at home?

You can if the label allows and your washer is large enough. In a small drum the comforter cannot rinse or dry fully, which leads to soap residue, clumps and musty smells.

How often should a comforter be cleaned?

With a duvet cover, once or twice a year is typical. Without a cover, or with pets or allergies in the house, clean it more often.
